In 2018, the regulatory business department of a global pharmaceutical company came to us with a request: How can we transform the way we do business in a way that makes our employees feel more whole at work, while becoming more relevant and prepared for the changing future? Working closely with the client and with the employees, we developed several concepts to bring evolutionary change to their organization. When I joined the team, we were in the co-creation phase of the project and I worked closely with three business designers.
My contribution ranged from traditional service design work to some visual design. I created assets such as service design blueprints and journeys to work as aids while communicating the new concepts and methods. Additionally, I helped structure and write the content for the training materials that were used to establish the transformation and helped facilitate the training sessions. To help foster a feeling of ownership of the new organizational structure, I co-created internal branding with each team, and helped them set up their own individual microsites.
While it was a new topic for me, the New Ways of Working was an incredibly inspiring project which taught me a lot about the invisible power of design and about understanding the needs of many different people. It left a lasting impact on me, and I have been part of a small team in Fjord that has worked to spread our point of view on how to create organizations that work for people. This has included experimenting with concepts within our own studio in Berlin.
